Is it open to the public?

Yes.  This year we opened the Old School Golf Outing to the public.  All golfers are welcome.  Overland has been gracious to host us this year and block off the entire front 9 for a 9-hole shotgun.

How do I sign up?

Just complete the information on the Sign Up page or email Mike McFadden (mike.mcfadden [at] gmail.com).

Do people really dress up?

Absolutely.  We will see outfits from the 1800s to the 1970s.  Plaids, ties, bell bottoms, knickers and such are all encouraged.

How much is it?

It’s $40 to play golf and join everyone at the Garden Party.  It’s $20 if you only want to come to the Garden Party.

What is a Garden Party?

This Garden Party is a post-golf event that will have games, drinks, small eats, prizes and a great social atmosphere.  The games include a putting contest with old hickory putters, a chipping contest with a Niblock (hickory shaft 8-iron which looks more like a sandwedge) as well as others.  It will test the skills (or lack of skills) with everyone!

Are there prizes?

Yes.  There will be prizes for best dressed, best old clubs, lowest score, and various other categories.  There is at least one grand prize as well.

What is the grand prize?

If you have not heard yet, the Klatt and Kreckman show will be broadcasting live from the event.  Joel Klatt is the former quarterback of the CU Buffaloes.  The Klatt and Kreckman show will be giving away tickets to the CU vs. CSU game to one lucky winner.

This year we will be playing at the historic Overland Golf Course in Denver, Colorado.   Overland Golf Course opened in 1895 and is one of the most historic courses in the entire state.

Cost is $40 for golfers and that includes:

• 9 holes of golf
• The Garden Party including…
• Pimms and Lemonade (traditional English garden party drink)
• Fish and chip
• Post round games including putting contest (with hickory putters) and chipping contests with a original niblock.

The Garden Party starts at 6:30pm and will be held at the Overland golf course clubhouse.  Spouses, friends and family are invited to the Garden Party.  There will be games, food and drinks.  Non-golfers pay $20 for the Garden Party only.  Kids under 8 are free.

Rules include:

• All equipment (excluding balls and tees) must be manufactured pre-1975.
• No buggies or golf carts allowed during tournament play
• Push carts are allowed (although discouraged)

Check craigslist and search for

• “old golf clubs” – at the time of this post there were 41 options of which I think 10 were sets that would qualify; in fact, there is a set of MacGregor irons and Wilson woods  in Lakewood for only $15.
• “vintage golf clubs” – at the time of this post there were a dozen or so listings of clubs in the Denver/Colorado region
• “golf clubs” – a generic search can get some other options that might slip through the cracks.  Remember, many people that own old clubs don’t necessarily know how to describe them

Another option is to check out local garage sales (also easy to find on craigslist).  Lastly, don’t forget to stop by some pawn shops and thrift stores.  Arc, Savers, Goodwill and others all have some great options … many times including bags.

The first annual outing is scheduled 23 August 2008 at the historic Willis Case Denver public course. The game will be followed with a traditional garden party at the lawn bowling facilities in Washington Park. English Garden Party attire is recommended.
